Baltimore County Firefighters responded to the blaze at a home on the 3100 block of Shortway in Dundalk around 2:30 a.m. and found Barbara Spokus, 70, dead in the living room, police said Tuesday.

A man occupying the home was able to escape and was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

A dog also died in the fire, which officials have determined was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.
